Join us—empower young people, build skills, and have fun

by Scouts

Would you like to be part of a team who hikes, climbs, enjoys the great outdoors, whilst also learning new skills and pass on those you already have to the next generation?
As a Section Team Member, you will have the opportunity to do all this by supporting the Section Team Leader to plan and deliver a safe programme for young people, whilst running games and activities as part of weekly meetings.
You can choose to support young people from age 4 to 18, so there is an age range for every skill set.
All sections work towards challenge and activity badges covering a range of topics and skills.
A sense of humour, empathy with young people and enthusiasm are the main ingredients you can learn the rest as you go along.
You might be able to come every week, or every other week. You might have a specific skill you want to bring to the team and focus on that, or be behind the scenes helping with tidying up, shopping and preparing resources for the sessions. Whatever time or skills you have to give, we can find a task for you which will make a different to young people.

Organisation description

Every week we give almost half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life.
Everyone’s welcome here - all genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of ability, there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.
Sandwell Scouts operates a number of groups across the District. They all meet on different days and at different times depending on the age of the Section.
There are groups in:
Wednesbury
Great Barr
Hill Top
West Bromwich
Tipton
Tividale
Rowley Regis
Oldbury
Abbey Hill (Smethwick)

Accessibility

We welcome applications from all background and lived experiences and will discuss any needs to ensure an appropriate match to the right volunteering tasks.

Preferred skills

A desire to support young people develop the skills they need for life – independence, confidence and achievement – which they may not always receive in a formal environment.

Enthusiasm, patience, a sense of humour and a willingness to learn are the key ingredients.

Experience gained

Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Scouts can make you feel good in other ways too. We’ll guide you to an opportunity where you’ll:
• Make friends and meet people
• Try new things and challenge yourself
• Get outdoors and get stuck in
• Positively impact your community
• Create vital opportunities for young people
• Make memories that'll last a lifetime

As part of your learning you will gain knowledge and skills in safeguarding, safety, GDPR and First Aid. There are opportunities to undertake further learning to increase your knowledge and skills in working with young people, and in practical skills such as Bush Craft and adventurous activity permits (archery, hillwalking, rifle shooting, pioneering, water sports) should you wish to.
