Squirrel Scouts is the newest branch of the Scout family tree for 4-6 year olds. This is an age when minds are fizzing, energy and curiosity levels are high and lives are full of wow and wonder.
Would you like to use your fun, enthusiasm and joy in seeing young people at this influential stage in their lives to learn, explore, take risks and dive in to new activities?
Team Work makes the dream work. As Section Team Leader you will help plan and deliver a safe and exciting programme of activities for young people aged 4-6 years.
You are someone who excites, motivates and plans ahead. You will enjoy working as part of a team to inspire and help young people reach their potential through earning badges and awards. You won’t do this alone – you will have support from team members, parents and the young people themselves – it is your drive and enthusiasm that will inspire them.
There is a 2 year pre-written programme for Squirrel Scouts, so you can base your sessions on this while you get used to the role, and there are online cohort meeting to support new Squirrel Volunteers too.
Every week we give almost half a million 4-25 year olds the skills they need for school, college, university, the job interview, the important speech, the tricky challenge and the big dreams: the skills they need for life.
Everyone’s welcome here - all genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of ability, there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it.

We welcome applications from all background and lived experiences and will discuss any needs to ensure an appropriate match to the right volunteering tasks.
A desire to support young people develop the skills they need for life – independence, confidence and achievement – which they may not always receive in a formal environment.
Enthusiasm, patience, a sense of humour and a willingness to learn are the key ingredients.
You may have a specific skill set linked to badge work that you could bring to a section, but that is not essential.
As a team leader, organisational, motivational and team work skills are beneficial, but you will be supported to learn what you need to know as you go along by the group lead volunteer.
Volunteering can be a brilliant way to boost your mental wellbeing. It’s a great feeling knowing you’re helping young people get skills for life, and you might even learn a lot about yourself along the way.
Scouts can make you feel good in other ways too. We’ll guide you to an opportunity where you’ll:
• Make friends and meet people
• Try new things and challenge yourself
• Get outdoors and get stuck in
• Positively impact your community
• Create vital opportunities for young people
• Make memories that'll last a lifetime
As part of your learning you will gain knowledge and skills in safeguarding, safety, GDPR, and First Aid. There are opportunities to undertake further learning to increase your knowledge and skills in working with young people, and in practical skills such as Bush craft and adventurous activity permits (archery, hillwalking, rifle shooting, pioneering, water sports) should you wish to.
Volunteering with Scouts can boost your CV by demonstrating commitment to something, independence, the ability to plan and meet goals, organisation, decision making skills, communication and teamwork skills, and leadership skills to name a few.
