Brushstrokes Men’s Group has been running since April 2022 and hosts weekly sessions to encourage male service users to spend valuable time together. We offer a range of activities to appeal to our service users, and these have included gardening projects, nature walks in the local area including on the canal, arts and craft sessions, and football sessions. Many of these activities are run in partnership with organisations such as the Canal & River Trust and community arts organisations. The men’s group is a weekly session, however, we are not restricted by a particular day of the week. There are many ways how a male volunteer can contribute to this group. This can include: being a friendly face during our sessions, running a particular session about a topic that you have a passion for, setting up the room for the session, promotion of the men’s group.

At Brushstrokes Community Project, we run the Brushspokes Bike Project which provides our diverse set of service users with refurbished second-hand bikes, bike repair and in 2022 we also offered led bike rides, learn to ride sessions and bicycle maintenance classes. We’re looking for volunteers to support this increasingly popular project. We are particularly looking for volunteers to help out at our regular bicycle repair sessions, and help organise led rides. Knowledge about bicycles or bike repair isn’t essential – we equally value people’s willingness to get involved, their love of cycling and their tea making abilities.

Welcome Wednesday is a weekly session at Brushstrokes Community Project on Wednesdays 5-7pm. It is open to everyone and a great way for people to socialise, get out the house, make friends and learn new skills. We offer different activities, such as table tennis, chess, table football, board games, and people are welcome to bring their own games and activities. Alongside the activities, we offer drinks and biscuits/cakes to add to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We are looking for volunteers to support Brushstrokes’ staff during this session. Responsibilities include: (1) Setting up the hall for the session from 4:30pm (2) Welcoming guests and making them feel comfortable (3) Preparing teas/coffees (4) Joining in with games & activities (5) Helping to tidy away the hall after the session.

The Y’s Girls mentoring programme matches volunteer mentors with young girls aged 9-14 years old to support them to be their best. You will be assigned to a local Project Coordinator who will tell you more about Y’s Girls mentoring, as well as discuss your interests and availability. You will then be matched with a young person as your mentee. As a mentor, you will be offered a full package of ongoing training and support for your personal and professional development, to help you and the young person get the most out of the mentoring process. Over a 12 month period, you will regularly meet with your young person and work together to identify achievable goals to focus on. These goals should empower the young person, building their resilience and enabling them to lead fulfilling lives. As a mentor, you can also help the young person to access activities and services, and try new things.

We’re on a mission to break the stereotypical view of who a mentor can be- we welcome applicants of all industries and levels of experience. This is a great opportunity for you to gain skills in communication and leadership, building empathy and understanding of issues and barriers facing young people in their communities. Ideally once a week for twelve weeks, sessions last around an hour and are delivered in local schools. We will train you to be a mentor and provide ongoing support for the duration of the programme.

As an Independent Panel Member your role is to recommend the approval/disapproval/place restrictions on new and existing Shared Lives Carers. You have no legal responsibility, but you are there to advise the Registered Manager who will also attend Panel. Reports are sent to you by secure email at least two weeks before the Panel meeting. You then have time to prepare some questions you may wish to ask of the carers and assessor, which are directed by the Panel Chair. There is time set aside at the beginning of Panel for the members to discuss any concerns and there is also de-brief afterwards to share learning and thoughts with the Registered Manager.
