Make a positive difference to young people

by Sandwell Youth Justice Service

As a member of the community, you can become a Referral Order Panel Member. Being a Panel Member is a challenging but rewarding role. Together with your Panel colleagues, you will direct the way forward for young people who have admitted to offending. If you want to see less crime in your community, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved. You could be included in tackling youth crime and its consequences. We need people like you, people who will make a difference. It makes no difference where you come from or what you do as long as you are over 18 years old and are willing to make a difference in your community and can commit some of your time. Volunteers are needed to sit as Referral Order Panel Members to discuss offending behaviour with children and young people (aged 10-18) on a Referral Order (first level court-ordered community penalty). The panel of 2 or 3 members work with young people who have offended, their parents and, where possible, the victims of the offences towards agreeing a contract of interventions for the young people to take whilst on the Order. The purpose of this is to prevent re-offending and to give pay-back to the victim and community. Volunteers will also monitor the progress of individuals. Panels will take place at Sandwell Children's Trust Offices in Oldbury. No experience is necessary as full training will be given. Panels will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Tough care needed

by Sandwell Valley School

Sandwell Valley School caters for young people who, for varied reasons, fall outside of mainstream education. Some of those youngsters display challenging behaviour, which can affect the learning of the whole class. We are looking for volunteers who can be 'tough enough to care', and support us to deal with undesirable behaviour in school. Ideally this would be good experience for people considering a career in security, or who have recently retired from the services.
